Activities in brief:

The activities of the unit basically season specific and opportunity based. Looking into below and explained in brief:

1. Seeds procurement & supply to the department of agriculture:

• Under this activity the sowing seeds are mainly procured from the ROU’s and partly outside and the seeds are placed to the agriculture department based on the indents of Chamarajanagar, Kolar, Bangalore rural & urban, Hassan & Chickmagalur district. The entire operation is monitored till the payment and reconciliation of the stocks are done. The procurement and supplies are operated from end of April to July & stocks handling & recovery of payments will go up to December.
   
• Similarly the unit is also supplying seed material to the agriculture department for the rabi / summer which operates from mid of November to end of January. The main district covered for rabi programme are North Canara, South Canara, Hassan & Kolar district. The year wise seed operation for last 2 years are presented along side in the flag ‘A’ An average of 700 to 800 MTS of seeds are handled for both kharif & rabi season put together.
  

2. Seed multiplication / production programme:

• The Groundnut seed production was not given much emphasis earlier to 2004-05. DOC has taken this as an opportunity and making some modifications started organizing seed multiplication programmes at farmers level through department of agriculture and also directly.Under this programme the breeder seed allotted by department of agriculture, Govt. of Karnataka will be lifted from university of agriculture and are distributed to the farmers for further multiplication.
  
  Likewise the seed chains are also maintained by organizing the seed multiplication programme viz.,

• The production programme are organize through farmers of Chickmagalur, Shimoga district. The bulk seed are procured and lifted to DOC will be processed / cleaned to the norms of KSSCA and will be marketed to various agencies. The bulk seed are purchased by KOF at the rate of Rs. 200/- per qtl more than the prevailing highest marketing rate. Both kharif and rabi seasons put together, an average of 200 acres have been organizing in this programme where the farmers are benefited along with contribution and production subsidy to the KOF.

3. Commercial procurement for process of edible oil:

• This is one of the major area where DOC will procure the material from various sources and process for its oil. For many reason the rabi / summer season is not been performing from Davangere market mainly because of cropping pattern leading to poor arrival in the market and its quality problem like moisture and refraction. From last 3 to 4 years, DOC operations are restricted only to the kharif season which operates from December to January. During these months DOC procures the material directly from the APMC by participating tendering and also through secondary purchases like mill delivery of pods & kernels.
   
• For this entire operation the basic factor we operate is the “Oil cost”. The oil cost will be worked out keeping the cake rate in realization. Over the years, DOC has handled an average of 2000 tons under this operation. Operation of procurement & process spread from end of November to February.

4. Procurement of seeds for supply to the other department.

• From last 2 years, PASIC, Pondicherry Agro Industries corporation has shown interest in buying seeds from DOC. The activity is started by just 30 to 40 MTS and has reached 70 MTS and in the coming years indent may go upto 90 to 100 tons.For this operation, DOC utilizes the seeds obtained from seed production and other varieties are directly procured from the farmers at villages. The programme operates between October to December.

5. Custom hired operation:

• On request of DOFCO & ROU’s, DOC will take up custom hired operation on agreed terms. The Groundnut & Sunflower will be processed on behalf of DOFCO or union and the finished goods are handed over to them.

6. Trading operation:

• Institution like NAFED during the season ask for procurement on behalf of them, DOC directly procures Groundnut & Sunflower from APMC’s and hand over directly to the agencies. We get the payment against our bill including the service charges @ Rs. 0.75 to 1.00 % as agreed. This operation operates during the procurement season.
